Welcome to Insiders Views, Harish. We’d love to know—how did your journey in the tech industry begin, and how has it evolved over the years?

Harish Kumar Sriram:

Thank you for having me! I kicked off my career about 15 years ago as a Full Stack Java Developer. At the time, I was building monolithic applications using Spring and Hibernate, deploying them on bare-metal servers or traditional on-prem data centers. I handled everything—from backend services and front-end interfaces with JSP and later Angular, to database management and writing bash scripts to keep servers operational.

As I gained experience, I naturally shifted into more architectural roles, especially as I got deeper into distributed systems and microservices. The rise of AWS marked a significant turning point—I embraced cloud infrastructure, working on EC2-based solutions as well as fully serverless architectures with Lambda, API Gateway, and DynamoDB. I became fluent in Infrastructure-as-Code, leading cloud migration projects and designing resilient, scalable platforms.

In recent years, I’ve gravitated toward AI and machine learning. It’s not just about using existing models; I’ve worked closely with data scientists to productionize ML pipelines and develop AI-driven features like NLP, predictive analytics, and recommendation engines. What drives me is a constant curiosity and a desire to build solutions that truly solve real-world problems. Along the way, I’ve mentored engineers, led cross-functional teams, and remained hands-on with coding—even while serving as a Principal Engineer. That balance of leadership and technical depth keeps me inspired every day.

What are your long-term goals, and where do you envision yourself in the coming years?

Harish Kumar Sriram:

Long-term, my goal is to step deeper into leadership—not just as a technical decision-maker, but as someone who actively shapes product vision and engineering culture on a broader scale. I envision myself evolving into roles like Chief Architect or VP of Engineering, where I can blend my hands-on experience with strategic influence.

I’m especially passionate about the fintech domain. Over the years, I’ve developed a strong interest in digital payments and financial platforms, particularly around real-time and contactless payment systems. The complexity of the entire lifecycle—from transaction authorization and settlement to fraud detection and ensuring system reliability under heavy load—really fascinates me. It’s a space that demands both precision and innovation, and I want to be at the forefront of building secure, scalable, and intelligent systems in this area.

Whether it’s designing low-latency APIs, integrating with global financial networks, or embedding AI into fraud prevention workflows, I’m drawn to the technical depth and real-world impact of these challenges. My vision is to lead teams that build such platforms—powering seamless, secure payment experiences for millions of users.

In the coming years, I aim to help define the next generation of payment infrastructure. That means modernizing legacy systems, championing cloud-native architectures, and pushing the envelope with AI-driven solutions. I want to grow into a leadership role where I can drive that innovation, mentor talented engineers, and ensure that every tech decision is closely aligned with business value. That’s the path I’m committed to, and I’m genuinely excited about what lies ahead.

Who has been the most significant source of inspiration in your life?

Harish Kumar Sriram:

That’s an easy one — early in my career, the biggest influence was my first real tech lead. He wasn’t flashy or high-ranking, but the way he led by example really shaped how I approach engineering today. He had this calm, focused presence — even when everything was on fire. He’d break down problems clearly, communicate with empathy, and rally the team without making it about ego. That experience taught me that great engineers aren’t just great at code — they’re great at thinking clearly under pressure, listening well, and bringing people together to solve the right problems.

More recently, I’ve been deeply inspired by Satya Nadella — not just for his technical background, but for the way he’s transformed Microsoft’s entire culture. What really stands out to me is how he placed empathy and a growth mindset at the heart of a massive organization, while still steering it toward bold innovation. That ability to lead with humanity and vision at such scale is something I truly admire — especially as I work toward stepping into higher leadership roles myself.

So for me, it’s really a blend of both: the personal mentorship that laid the foundation early in my journey, and the global example of someone like Nadella showing how leadership rooted in empathy and clarity can still drive meaningful innovation.

Please list some of the notable recognitions that you have received.

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to receive a few recognitions that really validated the work my teams and I have invested in. Personally, I’ve been acknowledged for leading mission-critical cloud migration initiatives, modernizing legacy payment processing systems, and mentoring engineers across diverse cross-functional teams. I’ve received multiple internal awards that highlight my contributions to technical leadership and innovation—particularly in building scalable, fault-tolerant architectures for high-throughput, real-time environments.

The fintech and digital payments space continues to evolve rapidly, driven by innovation, security, and user-centered design. Being deeply involved in this domain has allowed me to contribute to transformative technologies that power real-time, contactless, and secure financial interactions across the globe.

From building systems that meet the highest security and compliance standards — such as PCI DSS, ISO 27001, and SOC 2 — to playing a role in cloud transformations and AI-driven fraud prevention, the journey has been both challenging and fulfilling. It’s incredibly rewarding to work on engineering solutions that directly impact millions of users and support critical financial infrastructure.

I take great pride in being part of this progress — helping shape platforms that are not only technically robust but also aligned with the future of digital finance.

What were the most challenging obstacles you’ve encountered in your career?

Harish Kumar Sriram:

One of the most demanding challenges I’ve faced was leading a large-scale legacy system modernization in a live payments environment. We were working with aging monoliths that processed critical real-time transactions—systems where even a small disruption could lead to downtime and massive financial impact. The stakes were incredibly high. We couldn’t afford to halt operations, so we had to approach the modernization incrementally, carefully refactoring and decoupling while keeping everything live, secure, and compliant. It tested every bit of my technical depth, planning precision, and leadership patience.

Another major challenge was leading through cultural change. I’ve stepped into teams where morale was low, the vision was unclear, and internal trust had eroded. Turning that kind of situation around requires far more than just technical fixes—it’s about communication, empathy, and rebuilding a shared sense of purpose. You have to earn credibility, not assume it, and rally people toward a collective future they can believe in. It’s one of the hardest things to do, but when it clicks, the momentum you build is unmatched.

And like many in this field, I’ve had my share of imposter syndrome—especially in the early days of taking ownership of high-impact systems or being in rooms with senior executives and global stakeholders. I used to question whether I belonged there. But I’ve learned to trust the process, embrace continuous learning, and lean into the strengths of my team. Over time, that confidence gets forged through experience.

Each of these challenges has been a growth accelerator. They pushed me to evolve—not just as a software architect, but as a leader and problem-solver. Looking back, I wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything.
